Ryanair opens 39 new routes in the Canary Islands
20-11-2009
Ryanair will open 39 new routes starting and finishing in the Canary Islands in the 2009 winter season, between October 26th and March 27th. Michael Cawley, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the controversial low cost Irish airline, announced that Ryanair will increase its operations in Lanzarote, Grand Canary and Tenerife opening these 39 new routes, 36 of which will be international and three domestic, and plans to transport two million passengers a year to the islands. Specifically, in the Tenerife Sur airports, the closest to Mare Nostrum Resort, the company will open 16 routes, on which the airline plans to transport 700,000 passengers a year. The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ryanair stated that the continuity of these routes beyond March 31st, 2010 "will depend on the extension of the 100% discount on airport fees offered by Aena", although he trusts that, in view of the current global downturn in traffic and tourism, in Spain as well as the Canaries, "the Government will act wisely and extend the reduction of airport costs not just to the islands, but to the rest of the country".
